The Talley Gallery in Bridgeman is home to monthly exhibitions from artists all over the world. The most recent show to land at the gallery is an exhibition of cut paper works from artist Jennifer Falck Linssen. Linssen is classically trained in the Japanese art of katazome (paper stencil cutting) and fuses her traditional work with contemporary sculptural elements to create flowing three-dimensional pieces that are displayed in collections and galleries all over the world.
In addition to presenting her work, Linssen led a workshop with the Printmaking students to demonstrate some the intricacies of traditional Japanese stencil making. The quick class focused on the method Linssen uses in her work, known as ‘katagami.’ The students had the opportunity to test katagami equipment hands on in the lab, seeing (and smelling) the traditional smoked mulberry paper, as well as testing both the knives and punches used to craft the stencils.
These gallery openings are excellent experiences for both students and artists involved. As well as providing publicity for the artist, they allow students to meet and connect with successful artists in the real world, often an invaluable experience.
